Bill was a chauffeur for VIP guests, but on one instance he had a very important guest. Picking up The Pope from the airport. Bill helped put his bags in the back of the stretched Limo, but the Pope wouldn't get in.

"Can you get in the back your Holiness", asked Bill

"Can I drive today, I've always wanted to drive a Limo", replies the Pope.

Bill worries alot and says, "With all due respect your holiness, if I let you drive, I'll get the sack".

The Pope replies, "No you won't, I'll see to it that you don't. Now let me drive"

Bill reluctantly agrees and lets the Pope get in the driving seat. Immediately, the Pope floors it out of the airport carpark, tyres screeching as they go. Then onto the highway. The Limo flies down the outside lane overtaking everyone. Bill's literally sh*tting himself, knowing he's gonna get caught.

Eventually, the Police pulls them over. Now Bill's really sh**ing it. As the Policeman walks up to the window, he realises it's the Pope driving, and lets him go free. Back at the police station the copper says to his chief, "You'll never guess who I pulled over today"

His chief says, "Who, Michael Johnson?"

"No. Someone bigger than that", says the copper.

"Errr, was it Brad Pitt?"

"No" says the copper, "much bigger than that"

"Was it George Bush?"

"No where near. I think it was god", says the copper.

The chief looks bewildered, "Why do you think that?"

"Because the Pope was the f*cking chauffeur!!"

I thank you.

Eddie, I will have a fiver on thoroughbread Miles and a fiver on Ryan "the fox" Falkner.Tho mapp on leg one is worth a good bet as is a few quid on outsider bromley with still 10 days to go. Cotton still a month away from being "the man."-A good stayer on any type of "going".Fraser at 500-1 xcelelnt odds but not sure the young colt will be properly treaded in by this time.If it had been xc my bet would have increased to a tenner on "The Fox"

Carter,

Dare I say this but thanks for offering. Franko and I will stay at your place on the Friday night before the race. We must all have the same amount of sleep and prefect prep etc.

Doran and Franko- You're both welcome to stay round mine before the race. Mrs Carter will have the ham sandwich finger buffet ready for supper, followed by intraveinous injections of pure carbs and caffeine. Doran, I like the positivism (is that a word?). I'm sure Chris will love it too!!

Eddie the Shoe- I'll put my right leg on 'not so fat' fox Falkner, and half of my left leg on Mappy, the other half on Cotto. If Milo was as fit as a fiddle, I'd put my right arm on him. As an outside bet, my left arm's going on Wayne.

Cheers, Cartier.

P.S. Franko will be quickest out of me, him and Doran. Possibly quicker than Crippin. Though you never know with Swoop, depends on how many victims have wondered by his house the night before. He tells me all the goings on from the youths on Broughton Astley park. Who's tourched who's car, who's knockin' off with which bird. Swoop's binoculars have never been so greatly used since checking for intruder bats on the outside coffin bunker.

Not sure about that Franko.

Maybe the order will be Miles, Cotton, Mapp, Ryan, Brommers, O'neill. With the first four being within 10secs and me 2secs behind the fourth time due to some Irish Leprechaun rugby tackling me at Keepers Pool.

If it wasn't for external interference I would be equal second on time. Yeah.

Re: Charnwood team?

To add to Paul Richardson who will run significantly faster than any OWL there is also Tim Hartley, Robbie Neill, Stephen Mears and Paul Gregory to name but a few. This team would push any OWLS team close and this is before you consider the latest recruit sub 14:30 5K PB!

Good Luck

Charnwood mystery man,

Undoubtedly some descent guys but your only hope is that Richardson does run considerably faster than any OWL and you have somehow mastered the human cloning process and bring along the other 5 clones.

Tim is a good lad if he is fit so no disrespect to your other team members, just a bit of banter to add to the occasion you understand.

I presume your 14:30 recruit is currently in that shape? If not we can trump that.

steven mears is running very well at the moment. But is richardson fit and will neil be recovered from his half mara. The bottom line is that in terms of ability and team spirit and every other criteria we are at least 2 leagues above charnwood BUT we have to produce the goods.

Now we shall soon see within our own team who can cut it this season ,now we are being challenged by Charnwood. If we lose to them then the OWLS ought to be deeply embarrassed it will be a total loss of pride and dignity and we will be the laughing stock of leicestershire athletics and we would never again be in a position where we can say what we are 'going to do'

No disrespect to Charnwood....good luck.

Training day went well, same people missing tho. What we Lack in our club is what we will reap later,we will miss out by just that much. However,we are still able to win this weekend.

kEEP ME AWAY FROM TEAM MANAGEMENT BCOS WE WONT HAVE A TEAM.iF WE CANT GET PEOPLE TO TRAINING CAMPS THAT HAVE BEEN TALKED ABOUT FOR 3 MONTHS,THEN THOSE PEOPLE WOULDNT GET IN THE TEAM,IF WE DIDNT HAVE A STRONG ENOUGH TEAM THEN I WOULDNT ENTER ONE.

If people disagree with this approach then they ought to get on to those who frequently xxxx about with the clubs efforts to generate team spirit and performance. If these people dont subscribe to these concepts i would tell them to go and we can start afresh with those youngsters that do. ww

Hello there Mr Bromley!!

When we got your message saying you were at Heathrow, we thought it was just your navigating had gone wrong, I mean Heathrow's no where near Sutton Park!!

Yes indeed, my lovely predictions are based on Sundays training, which was very productive. Simon, Ryan and Milo all seemed to be on form, I was hanging on for dear life.

My predictions for your good self therefore, are a little bit of guess work, as you might well tot round in 18:05, but you might lose your power of castle grey-skull and only do 18:40 (yyyeeeeeaaaaahhhhhhhh).

Can't wait 'til Saturday, there'll be blood all around Keeper's Pool (And that's just Crippin eating the Swans).

why would rory be in the b team?

to put in a good b team performance i reckon you would need me and doran in the b team actually.

i take it rory you want to be on 1st leg to try and put the a team away--yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhh rory you sly great glen fox

loving the team speculation but as turlo said its down to team management at the end of the day.

rory, meakin, franko, doran, swoop, carter. what about rob orrs possee or are they too young?

oh yeah and doran stop sending me abusive text messages. if theres on thing that illness gives you its mental strength, even though i lost all my fitness i still got that.

LET BATTLE COMMENCE -cant wait to drown in all this talk when i run sh/t on saturday.

franko

what positon will the b team finish? eh turlo

sounds like theres quite a bit of camaradory going on and p/ss taking for the b team eh wayne like it should be, but we aint heard ought from the a team.

its all gone quiet, its all gone quiet in the a team!!!!

TO BE HONEST I THINK THE B TEAM WILL DO BETTER THAN LAST YEAR. ON THE OTHER HAND BOYCE WAS IN THE B TEAM AND RAN 18.30 WHICH HAD A HUGE IMPACT COSIDERING THE REST OF THE LADS RAN BETWEEN 20 AND 21 MINS

DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT THE FITNESS STATUS OF FRANKO, DORAN AND ARCHER TO MAKE ANY PREDICTIONS.

TO BE HONEST THE B TEAM PLACES ARE STILL UP FOR GRABS AND THERE ARE 8 RUNNERS IN CONTENTION TO FILL 6 PLACES

BOYCE AND BRIDGES ARN'T RUNNING AND THEY WOULD OF MADE A BIG IMPACT

TURLO

PS. RORY WASN'T SELECTED FOR THE A TEAM AS O'NEIL PUT HIM AWAY AT THE A AND L. WE ALSO FELT O'NEIL HAD MORE SPECFIC 5KM TRAINING BEHIND HIM WHERE AS RORY HAD BEEN CONCENTRATING ON 800 AND 1500 OVER THE SUMMER AND WILL TAKE A WHILE LONGER TO GET INTO CROSS COUNTRY/ROAD RACE MODE

WE HAD 8 RUNNERS TO CHOOSE FROM FOR THE A TEAM AND TO BE HONEST WE HAVE NEVER BEEN IN SUCH A GOOD POSITION FROM A SELECTION POINT OF VIEW

HOPE THAT MAKES SENSE

Alright OWLs boys 'n' girls!!

Chris/Turlo- I have had a slight accident!!! Yesterday after school I went for an easy run. It was about half seven as I'd been in a meeting, so it was getting dark.

Whilst keeping to grass, my left leg managed to fall down a rabbit hole of some sort (don't laugh, I'm not joking!). I seemed to twist my left knee outwards and I think I've damaged the outer ligaments, as it bloody hurt at the time, and is painful to walk on, feels like the bottom half of my leg is going to fall off!!

At the moment, it looks grim to be able to run Saturday, as at the minute there's no way I can run on it. I'm just hoping it isn't going to be too long term an injury.

The word "Bugger" springs to mind.

Cartier

P.S. Franko- Don't laugh you scheister, I can't believe I've been felled by a rabbit.

As long as you are 90% and in sub 18.30 shape then we should leave you in the team.

But if you feel that the cold will have a major affect on your performance (or your not sure) and you might run say 19 mins, then we should consider Rory.

Long before humans started playing games, natural selection discovered the fundamentals of game theory and shaped animal societies according to its rules. Within species, individuals adopt alternative competing strategies with frequencies that reflect the success of each strategy. Evolutionary Stable Strategies occur when alternative competing strategies are at equilibrium. Competition within species has generated many Evolutionary Stable Strategies with colourful titles like: Bourgeois, Scrounger, Sneaky, Satellite, Transvestite, and Sex-change. However, co-operation within and between species has generated only one Evolutionary Stable Strategy., TIT FOR TAT.

How about loss of status within a social group. How about Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, how about individuals knowing (they dont always naturally know)of their potential as athletes/human beings and then knowing they could achieve it and then realising they are bone idle bxxxxrds(which will see a loss of the rewards this may bring to support their natural inclination for survival...ie social predeterminants of natural selection/alliances etc)How about tribal culture.Didnt dinosaurs have friends.

Post 6 Stage analysis:

Well below par performance all round.

In some cases this was due to the athlete just coming out the track season where training has been very specific towards 800m and 1500m

Some were coming off the back of illnesses

In some cases it was just due to a lack of fitness, poor prep and a complacency that they will be in the team.

Gone are the days where athletes can rely on natural talent with a few weeks hard training leading up to the event.

Gone are the days of having no specific aims over the summer and just ticking over.

We now have the weapons to win events such as the 6 stage, birm league and midland x country BUT we really our weapons firing on all cylinders if this is going to happen.

This season could be the season that the Owls arrive at senior level.

We have the athletes to do it now BUT its going to take a great deal of hard work, dedication, COMMUNICATION WITH THE CLUB, team spirit etc etc

The squad needs to be training together on a regular basis for us to achieve our goals

The first birmingham league fixture is just over a month away. This will be when the season really starts so lets not screw up on this one!

We will also have to consider whether we want to do the national 6 stage as the racing program around this time is quite hectic and we don't want to be over racing in the early season like last year.

I cant's see the point in us entering the national unless we are going to make an impact in the top 10 and this will mean the team having to improve by at least 3 mins!

The team management are going to have to question their approach and ways of improving communication between the whole club and getting those who are not living in the area more involved

More later

yeah something like that!

Please note that im not slagging anyone off here.

Im just pointing out why we were below par.

As part of the team management i feel there is going to have to be an inquest into the process of selecting future teams and getting regular feedback on those which we do not see as often. Also there was a selection process laid out but only 50% of out athletes for both teams went through this process.

In the future we may have to inforce the selection process 100%

ie. if you don't do the selection races and training weekends then your not in the team

The selection process outlined for the 6 stage was as follows

1: A&L 5km Road Race

2: Training session at Sutton Park

Out of all the athletes in the club ONLY 4 went through this process (2 of which didn't do the 6 stage due to injury)

Another 4 went through part of this process ie did the A&L or training weekend

I think we need to be a little careful about taking such a hard line about people not attending sessions etc. Whilst it is unfair for Wayne et al to give up their time and for people simply to ignore this it is also unrealistic to expect 100% attendance all of the time.

It is difficult enough for some of us to ensure they can attend races let alone fit in other weekend sessions. The fact 4 people are singled out implies the others are being criticised and I dont like that, if the management have issues with individuals then they should be addressed to that individual and the use of catch-all criticisms should stop. Better to have 1 real issue with 1 person then inadvertently piss off 10.

Until people live my life and juggle the things I try to juggle then they dont have the right to criticise my commitment. Rightly or wrongly my priorities revolve around keeping the roof over my head, maintaining the relationship I am in and running.

I am not single, live at home, in Leicester, have sole access to a car

We can only do what we can and if compulsory sessions are used for selection without regard for an individuals situation then running gets pushed further DOWN the priority list, not up it.

Just my thoughts, bearing in mind it is Monday and I just had a crap meeting.

Thanks for the feedback Rich!

Sorry to sound too critical but the point I was making about the the selection process was that such a small % of the club went through at least part of the selection process (we do have approx 140 seniors) and it makes it very difficult to get the best team out for imp events such as the 6 stage when you don't know whos in what shape.

Personally I feel the selection process set out gave the athletes the opportunity to attend one of the two set selection events. Attendance over the 2 selection events was better ie. we had 8 go through 1 of the 2 selection events (Brommers, Meako, Carter, Cotton, Falkner, Doyle, O'neil, Milo, Fraser).

Basically its very hard to assess peoples fitness for a major event when you've not seen them in action for a while.

In my opinion the team management is currently only about 70% effective and me chris and wayne need to look at ways of improving this and getting those on the fringe more involved. What the club has done well over the past year or two is to get a high % of its athletes out to all major and semi major fixtures

There is still a great deal of work to be done though.

We now have the weapons to do some real damage this x country season.

midland x country champions

victory in the 1st 2 birm leagues

top 5 in nat relays and x country champs!

more later

Agreed in that there has to be a way of proving fitness prior to selection and I know me agreeing with that whilst still holding true to my comment before does make it dificult.

I do think that the fact a session was planned a long way in advance for the week before means that you (the mngmt) did as much as can be expected. I was able to attend except for my last minute problem.

Did you get reasons for all the other non attendees?

To be honest we did get a few of the lads who said they couldn't make it for a variety of reasons and a few dropping out in the week or two before as we didn't really chase people up and get a definate program of activities out and they simply forgot about it.

The other problems were internal between the management as basically what we do is designate a group of athletes to each person and then make sure that they are kept fully informed. Sometimes we simply forget to chase people up in good time and leave it till a week before and by that time other plans have been made.

I know that this is where wayne thinks the team management could improve. One of the other things that have been mentioned is that the management are a bit soft at times. Eg. If i say that im going to contact people about races and then don't then i should be b*ll*cked and if an athlete turns round and says that they can't do the midland champs without much of an explanation then questions should be asked. Upto now this probably hasn't happened and we will be looking to maximise our effectiveness over the next few months. Of course we have to be careful about giving the impression that we are slagging people off and something i will have to improve on as a get older.

The end result will be the whole squad going into championship races better prepared than we have ever been before until we eventually get it perfect. The day we do get it perfect will be the day we win a national title as we certainly have the potential within the club to do so. We now have a squad of quality athletes who can achieve great things. What we can promise is that we currently have a group or 8 14-16 year olds who will be coming through in the next 5 years and then you've still got the likes of meakin, fraser and miles who are still very young. This to go along with our current crop of maturing seniors will be a force to be reckoned with!

Lads we have to seriously consider what fixtures over the next month we want to do

Mid X this weekend

23rd oct Nat Road

30th oct Birm league 1

6th Nov Nat relays

I feel that its important to make a major impact in 1-2 races rather than a medium impact in all four.

We also have to consider the individual ie is doing 3 races on the trot going to risk injury, result in an early peak or effect early season training volumes

I feel that the lads were over raced early last season as we were trying to cover too many events.

Any thoughts?

Unless we are all going to run 30-40 seconds quicker then the National Road relays are somewhere we are not going to make an impact. If we are training properly for the X season then I don't think this is condusive to running considerably faster over 6K on the road.

The first Birm Lge and the national X relays are a better bet and in the latter it would be good if we can get effectively 2 'A' teams.

A top 3 sweep at the county cross, medal at the midland cross with 3 individuals in the top 10.

Just to let you know we wont be defending our title on Saturday as its an insignificant race and the lads would be better training through and avoiding over racing in the early season.

Brommers, Falkner, Fraser and Milo would of walked it like last year anyway and there's not much room for anymore trophies in the clubhouse.

What! Are you serious?

There is no one in the same class as Dylan.A challenge for you...ask ANY songwriter or song writing critic (and i mean ANY) and ask them if Dylan is top of the PREMIER Div how many more songwriters are there in the 2nd division ...because hes at least two divisions above anyone else.Love him or hate him,he is unique in this sense.

Tho i will look out for this chap you are on about

Maccoll ability far exceeds Dylan. This man invokes the hardship of modern industrial life and yet sang songs of pastoral lyricism about Kinder Scout and Scarfell. His songs stretch from "Black And White" about the Sharpsville massacre to the" First Time I ever Saw your Face"(original sang with Polly Seeger(Mrs Maccoll), later by Roberta Flack)). The "Joy Of Living" is superb in it's emotive lesson for life and living, from a man approaching death.

Maccoll draw from from Scottish and English folk tradition to create contemporise songs and yet could sing tradition songs with great authority and beauty. Listen to the "Highland Muster" and not feel the passion of the Jacobite Clans. Listen to the "Ye Shoals of Herrings" and not imagine yourself on deck singing and bringing in the catch.

Well done to the OWLS for finishing 5th at the Midland Six Stage. This was one position better than i previously predicted, although some teams did field significantly weakened squads!

It should be interesting at the National Six Stage to see whether OWLS or Charnwood are first Leicestershire team. With the inclusion of Paul Richardson and Tim Hartley i predict Charnwood to triumph.

Why are the OWLS Senior Men not defending their title at Brooksby on Saturday? This could be your only chance of success this winter already missed?

It is amusing after all the hype in the run up to the Midland Six Stage from this club it did not take long for the wheels to come off the OWLS bandwagon!

Great News as you can see from the Index Page I have Launched a New Discussion Forum with many advanced features.

The Old Forum is still on the web I shall put a special link in that will allow reading but NO new additions.

This is a major step forward in having a " profesional" looking Forum.

It does require you to log in and create your own user profile if you wish to create or reply to any topic.

This will then allow me to have more control if necessary.

I intend that the Chat Page will also follow this route shortly and will co-exist with the Forum.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Good Luck for Saturday in the XC races.

Just been looking at the photos of the 6-stage, some good uns, though I was disappointed to see no one had sneaked into the female dressing area (not that I condone that sort of behaviour, it's very wrong).

One thing I noticed from the photo's is most people's start positions....thank god we ain't sprinters!!! Most of us start with feet facing sideways, and the same side arm and leg pointing forward (ie- left arm and left leg). Put us in the 100m and we'd be off into the grand stand at the side with arms and legs all over the place!!! LOVE 2

Just thought I'd add that, incase there's a lovely young lady on this site, after Falkner the Fox, and I wouldn't want to put her off by saying he's gay. Then again, once a girl hear's one of his LEEEEE-IIIIII-NNNNNNNZ, they'd be no holding back!!!

Turlo,

Most site hace a registration system. I use the Betfair site for example under a nom de plume( not Che) and I don't want othr people using my identity. Also I don't want the general public to know my real identity in relation to my opinions about individuals, events, what I have done or going to do. Also it allows T.V. personalities Journalist Bookmakers to hide theirs and give me some fun trying to work out who could know the drinking habits/funny stories etc of well known racing/sporting personalities.

Also it allows a logical sequence to chats and discussions.

When Pete gets the new chat page up and running with the initial bugs removed you will not want to return to this page.

Che,

chat page is becoming boring owls owls owls thats all we hear what about athletics full stop (as a country)or is it all or nothing for owls and by the way if you are really a committed club you should be running at the national 6 stage to represent the county as you keep saying you are the top team ( not club)as senior men in the county ps hope you fair well in bham lge top 5 i think , its about time other clubs in leics joined bham lge instead of the easy option of the north mids league

Why would we want to represent the county?Who makes up the county...are they full of praise for us,are they interested in what we do? I see no evidence of this.

We would love to run for those who respect our efforts but until then we will run according to OUR priorities.

The events we choose to do this year will take a hell of a lot of careful thought BY ATHLETES AND MANAGEMENT.It is a very difficult year to get the balance correct and we will be trying to sort out the best way forward for the team,so no one should jump to any conclusions about why certain events should or shouldnt be taken on.

The first thing our members should do is TURN up for training and then it may make these debates a little easier instead of debate by txt! Please watch this space with respect to training and racing developments...we will need a meeting to sort the season out so everyone is in the picture.

Pete,

1. To create tables and images do you ned to use HTML tags in the conventional way. i.e. could one transfer the HTML coding from say Front Page or Dreamweaver.

2. Where is the hyperlink to the true home page on the new discusion page?

3. The new discusion page is GREAT and massive improvement on the old discussion page.

Turlo,

What masses write on here!! If they are viewing then the do not need to log in. Surely the Notice Board is taking out some of the posts which would have been on the chat page. Look at the logical structure and the easy way one can view a thread on a subject.

I don't agree with your comments about the time it takes to sign in. When you first sign in Windows offers to keep the "sign in" details for you so all you have to do is click the box on the right hand side and enter your username then click in the box against password which will automatically be entered for you then click "log in" I've timed it and it takes 6 seconds. If you can't be bothered with that then maybe you don't have anything useful to say.!!!!

Also registering with the new page will still allow pseudonyms etc so people can remain annonymous and slag us off etc. What it will stop is people pretending to be someone else, which none of us like.

I would like us to try the new system for a week or two and I think you will all see that the benifits will outway any slight inconvenience.

Che if you look towards the top left hand side of each page you will see in Amber coloured text " OWLS AC HOME PAGE" this is the link back to our main index page., I'm working on making this more obvious and will update you as soon as I have.

I use Microsoft Front Page 2000 for most of my website construction, you can cut and paste various bits of HTML code into this as well.

Cheers

p.s. glad you like the improved format
