Owls take victory in Livingston Relays and first track and field league!

Round up of recent results:

24/04/2011 - Owls 'A' team comprising of Tom Mahon, Josh Norman, Paul Richardson and Paul Miles stormed to victory at the Livingston Relays. After moving from its traditional home around Loughborough University campus, the relays were held at Braunstone Park, with Paul Richardson setting the fastest time of 14.13 for the 3 mile course. The winning time of 59.25 was nearly 4 mintues ahead of the next team, Coritainian Vets. The Owls U20M also won their event with a time of 67.21, and the Owls B team was 10th in 71.00.

07/05/2011 - Strong preformances across the board ensured Owls were victorious in the first fixture of the Midland League, beating clubs such as Notts, Nuneaton and most notably, Leicester Coritianians. A number of top individual performances from both Owls men and women contributed to the victory, and this ensures Owls top the league, putting them in pole position to get promoted, with 3 fixtures to come.

Midland 12 Stage: Owls take 8th place

Owls finished a solid 8^th in the Midland 12 Stage relays at Sutton Park on Saturday 19^th March, to place as Leicestershire’s top Men’s team. Running as high as 5^th at one stage, despite having some athletes missing through injury, and despite some athletes competiting at the English Schools Cross Country Championships on the same day, the lads acquitted themselves well. Paul Richardson (26:28) ran the joint 4^th fastest long leg of the day, with Tom Mahon (28:05) and Paul Miles (28:16) recording 23^rd and 26^th fastest legs respectively. Our fastest short legs went to university students Tom Bell, Danny Hallam and Lewis Smart, who all sneaked inside the top 50 short legs of the day.

Our Senior Mens team added another year to the tally today, making it 24 consecutive years that we have been County Champions. The team comprised of Paul Miles, Josh Norman, Tom Meakin, Tom Bell and Jake Boat, narrowly beat Charnwood AC by a margin of 5 points.

In some more sad news, one of the leading figures in athletics in Leicestershire, Ted Toft, passed away last week. He will be greatly missed by everyone. More tributes can be found on the LRAA website, along with more information.

Weekend Roundup

Paul Miles took victory in the Wolverton 5 at the weekend in Buckinghamshire. Beating a strong field, Paul broke away over the final mile to clock 24:36.

At the European XC Trials in Liverpool, the Under 20 Men acquitted themselves well in freezing (but not snowy) conditions. Josh Norman seems to have raced himself fit over the course of November, placing 15^th in IAAF trials race, where GB will select 6 athletes to take to the European XC Championships in Portugal in 2 weeks. Danny Hallam continued his return from injury, placing 53^rd, just under a minute behind Josh.

OWLS finish solid 8th in first Birmingham League

Leamington Spa's Newbold Comyn played host to the first Birmingham League fixture of the season, and the Owls lads got off to a good start to the league they won won in 2008. Paul Miles started his winter campaign strongly, placing 19th to the lead the team home, while Tom Mahon, returning from injury for his first race in black and white since December 2009 came home 38th. Danny Hallam, after struggling with an achilles problem in September, has put this behind him to place 46th. The ever-dependable Tom Meakin, now a Birmingham league veteran finished 77th, and should definately improve as the season progresses. A great debut in this competition was had by young Ash Chambers, who is still adapting to 10km XC events after stepping up from U17, but he finished well in 41:32 (110th). The team was completed by Lewis Smart, his first race back after breaking his ankle some months ago, and was pleased to come home 132nd.

Next fixture is Sat 4th December at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.

Weekend Round Up

Well done to all those that took part in races this weekend!

Our mens relay team finished a reasonable 12th in the Midland 6 Stage Road Relays with performance of the day going to Paul Richardson. Paul has recently competed for GB and showed his class by recording the 3rd fastest individual leg time of the day, 17.37!

Sunday saw our team competing in the Round Leicester Relay, a relay competition with 13 legs totalling 92miles around Leicestershire. Our mixed team finished 31st overall but claimed 10th place in the mixed category. Danny Hallam was the star of the day as despite competing in the 6 Stage the day before he managed to run his leg nearly 3 minutes quicker than anyone else.

Magic Mile & Leicester Fun Run Results

Well done to everyone who took part last night.

The winner of the staggered start Magic Mile was Alistair Watson with the fastest time going to Danny Hallam (4minutes 35.2seconds).

The 5km Fun Run was won by Carl Voisey in a time of 17.26. The first female was Tara Tomson in a time of 22.21. The U17 category was won by Ben Carr in 21.06, closely followed by Rachel Maddock in 21.07.

Magic Mile & Leicester Fun Run

Following last year's success, Leicester Park's Servies is staging its second Magic Mile event at Victoria Park. Won last year by Owl's Paul Richardson in 4.23 on a twisty road course, this year's event is being held tomorrow evening, 29th July.

Again, this event is being held in conjuction with Leicester Fun Run, a 5km challenge starting a 7.40PM. All are welcome, and entry is on the night. There is also a 2.5km fun run for Under 11s.
