Alcohol was never considered to be a drug until recently at least not outside the scientific community. It is now(partly)in my view advertised as a drug primarily by those who wish to minimise the significance of 'acknowledged (illegal)drugs. They use alcohol as an example of the acceptability of drugs in society generally and support this argument by talking about the freedom of choice,cost/effectiveness of policing drug enforcement programs and the debate over he ACTUAL psycho-physiological effects of certain drugs and the risks involved.

However, i agree with a lot Paul says with respect to why people start drinking, how they sometimes act when they have had a drink and the negative effects of excessive or 'binge' drinking. In my experience a lot can be learned down the pub through discussion and open communication, friendships made and bonded! The ability to communicate with each other in todays society is quite possibly being reduced. Here the pub is still the best place to communicate in my view.Of course the quality of communication drops off somewhat after a few to many! You only have to be in leicester city centre on a friday or saturday night to see how alcohol can be abused!

There is undoubtedly an issue with respect to young people and drink.I have seen young and older adolesents drinking cans down their park for example. There is no justification for that and it is a matter for concern.
