Can the philosophy of Millimole help or assist the athlete to develop, or the coach to have a meaningful role? NO!! Why.
1. How does the coach relate to the indolent or weak willed individual who will not do the training the coach knows is necessary for advancement? For me there is only one answer. Tell the athlete to seek a new coach. 2. Distance running is a sport that by its very nature requires a dedicated and disciplined approach to achieve improvements and a ‘bleeding heart” set of excuses is less then helpful.
We are often hearing from the press and T.V. How much less time is available in our “modern busy lives”. This is absolute rubbish we have never worked less or had so many white-collar occupations. It really comes down to desire and hunger. To take an example of desire when Henry Cooper was a plasterer in the fifties he would get up at 4 a.m. to run 8-12 miles in army boots and then would work a full day. The evening would be spent doing gym work. The objective of any coach or mentor is to inspire the athlete not to conspire in excuses for lack of effort.
