Whilst this is a complicated issue and a 'one size fits all' view is always going to miss the subtleties of prepararing an athlete, i would like more of this as well!!To complicate the discussion i would ask that people comment on what speed is. A)Ability to tollerate and produce lactate b)Leg strenght c)leg speed D)stride length (flex, tech, strength) E)associated neuro muscular/technical considerations i. arm speed/range , knee lift.co-ordination of arms and legs f)Psychological factors. ETC
When we say that mileage does or doesnt reduce speed or does or doesnt increase speed etc .WHAT are we ACTUALLY saying? How does WHATEVER training we do in the winter influence the factors listed a-f and how should these either individually or in clusters be prioritised according to the strengths and weaknesses of the individual and the demands of the event..? Dont forget you can have an athlete with tremendous limb speed and a good endurance level who CANNOT tollerate lactic acid very well...Throw in for good measure the fact that with young developing athletes, strenghts and weaknesses and the event(s) they do may change! Do we concentrate on the strenghts OR the weaknesses of the individual?
Are there forms of training which incorporates the majority of a-f???
I
